Doctor Who 3x05 - "Evolution of the Daleks"
--When last we left our intrepid heroes, we'd been faced with a really gross thing with one eye, which seems kind of lame on a splicing/evolutionary scale. I mean, why not have two? We have two for a reason, you know. It's more Daleky, but that was the shell.
--Okay, all these guys keep turning humans into them. Like Cybermen. This is a really deep fear on the part of us humans, isn't it? We're terrified that we won't just be rubbed out, but made into the Other. I seems a little conceited, now that I think about it.
--I wish Dalek in Human Form had a cooler voice. This guy's kind of lame and fragile-looking. Much less interesting
--Wait, *music* is his secret weapon? Oh, okay. I thought he was going to get all "here's what you're missing about humanity, you poor machine-things!"
--I bet those Daleks are feeling extra cool now, looking at Sec. They're all like LOL, LEGS!! FTL! (Anyone who doesn't think Daleks are capslockers can GO NOW.)
--I like the THX 1138 escape. "They went up. Let's go home."
--So Daleks can have doubts about each other, opinions about each other, have anger, but not anything else? I mean, I know they're bred for destruction, but... ah well, that's the point, isn't it?
--Remember that history lesson you had about pig!men attacking tent cities during the Depression? Oh yeah, me neither.
--I never understand creatures with exposed brains. I mean, on a practical level. But the resemblance to Krang is amusing.
--Flying Daleks. Excellent. Not as impressive as the whole "It can't climb stairs" bit, but fun.
--"For all their faults, they have such courage." Aww, Dalek With Legs has something in common with the Doctor!
--Which is sort of what leader-dude is using as reason. Good luck with that, buddy. Let's invoke the Daleks' religious fervor. Or not.
--LOL WE HAVE NO HEARTS, N00B!
--XTERMIN8!!!! ACES
--Sorry, went all capsy. I can't help it!
--Uh, why would the Doctor think that killing him would stop them from killing the rest of them? This is a dumb plan. It's only written in to give Sec a chance to step in. Did he have some sort of plan? The Doctor, I mean. And plus, "Daleks never change their minds"? They did in "Dalek", yo. Too bad Rose isn't here to touch them. She had Hands of Humanity or something.
--So I guess he has a plan, since he gave Martha the psychic paper, which means also that he trusts her to work out something. Which is nice. But I still don't get the whole "kill me" thing. Because here's the thing: I don't buy a suicidal impulse here, not at the mental place he's at. Nine was crazier in that way. I just don't think it's translated.
--So people are the greatest resource of this planet? Man, I could go for some Soylent Green right about now.
--At least villains continue their noble tradition of explaining their plans. The Doctor's been running off that for almost a thousand years.
--We're still with the Ghostbusters building-as-conduit thing. But with the sun and genetic splicing and instantaneous animation of hybrids.
--The Daleks are gonna turn on this dude any minute now. Oh, there they are. Good on you, kids, you're idiots but you're a lot more fun that Poofy-Head here.
--I remember another time the Doctor agreed to rescue people who needed a new world. I hope he does. Because with thousands (or however many) of new Dalek-Humans, they'll have numbers. And crazy.
--Aww, Martha gets some girl-time to angst about Rose and rebounding.
--Mmm, gene solution and Windex.
--YOU HAVE LOST YOUR AUTHORITY!! Damn right. But can you make 100% Daleks from human bodies and Dalek genes? I guess in DW world, you can.
--I told you it wasn't going to end well, Sec. You should have listened. And you should have had a better handle on the psychology of your own people.
--The establishing shots of the Empire State Building make it look like they're looking at it from where they are, not standing on it. The shot-reverse-shot of it is confusing, and bad editing.
--That is a really slow elevator. Oh, sorry, lift.
--He really needs to put that screwdriver on a lanyard around his neck.
--That pig-frying rig was pretty effective, and nasty.
--It's actually kind of impressive that the Daleks will convert human shells into Daleks, given their extreme xenophobia.
--I'm really tired of the word "Dalekanium." Was this an undiscovered element that wasn't named until it became exclusively used for Dalek paneling?
--I can't help but wonder how the Daleks are controlling their army.
--Ooh, increased seratonin levels. That makes you human! Good to know, DSM-IV.
--I thought they'd pull a "Time Lord DNA" twist, by putting him in the lightning strike. But um... how is DNA carried along energy?
--Okay, so here's the one Dalek... Dalek Khan? Really? KHAAAAAAAAANNNN!
--I think it'd be good for him to fail saving Lazlo. I don't know, maybe not. Maybe I'm being too hard on him.
--Next week: Eternal life, the Jones's, and monsters.
I think I might be asking too much of this show, reading too much into it, or whatever, but I really don't think it's very good. I think I'm holding on for possibilities and nostalgia. When was the last time I was really satisfied by Doctor Who? What percentage of New Who eps did?
