I ship Doctor/Martha.
Oh my god.
It was that last two-parter that did it; she's so capable, so awesome, so in love and so bound for disappointment (again and again). Her feelings don't make her useless. I wish I could make a thoughtful review, but I don't feel like it and I just really loved it. And Martha's situation just *got* me.
I ship them in the way I shipped Mulder and Scully--I yearn for it but I don't want them together in canon, because that would probably ruin it. I'm content with fannish satisfaction of these urges. But I'm sure I never thought I'd care even that much.

Don't you love it when you start shipping against your will?
That's what happened to me with Mulder/Krycek.

Damn unintentional shippage!

She is an almost-Doctor (MD, about to take exams) and is ass-kicking in her new role. I totally buy her as someone who *wants* to be gallivanting around the galaxy.

I buy Rose that way, except sometimes I find it a bit annoying because it feels like "OMG I get 2 travel r0x0rz!!!1!" and less... discovering new life and civilizations and boldly going where no teenage British girl has gone before.

I may be retconning in my head like mad, though.

Exactly. Which is really really easy to identify with, but sometimes I want to shake her and say, look, it's so much bigger than you. Which I think Rose does understand, just sometimes it irritates me. I quite like her, though.
Right now I am partway into both S1 and S2 because I am watching S1 on TV and S2 on dvd. I just watched an S1 ep that finally explained who Jack is, and I was very seriously amused by him. Amusement is serious business!

I think she gets that, yeah, and I *did* like her well enough; it's just that Martha's got initiative and skillz. Rose is still in many ways a child. It's just a different vibe, and I admit I'm jaded by the "Rose is the One True Companion" business that was imposed by lots of the fans.
Oh Jack. How I wish I liked you better! I was so excited about getting some bi-action there, but as it turns out I really don't like Barrowman *or* Jack that much, so he fell flat for me. Perhaps it was the anticipation.

Yeah. And I'm wondering whether I like her better in S1 than S2 because the Doctor in S1 looks older and the teenage girl/older guy is *such* a kink for me. HA for I am shallow.
I don't know anything about the One True Companion business. Today I watched one from S2 where they meet Sarah Jane, and I thought it was really, really cool (but I don't really know old school Doctor Who so fans of the Fourth Doctor or whoever might've felt differently).
I don't know who Barrowman is yet, I don't think.

Yeah. The way it might be going for me is that Rose is Nine's companion, and Martha is Ten's. The "One True Companion" business I speak of is batshit Rosefen being violently opposed to her leaving or the Doctor being with anyone else.
I liked "School Reunion" because Sarah Jane is hot. The shippy stuff is a retcon, but I love her anyway. She reminds me of Laura Roslin, who is also hot (I've got this older woman thing going on these days, I guess).

the shippy stuff with sarah jane is a retcon, but at least it's a convincing one, and a possible one! i remember when i was watching the end of planet of the spiders and sarah has been hanging about UNIT for several weeks waiting for the doctor, who most everyone thinks is already dead, and she is pacing about hugging one of his shirts. so, yeah, she loved him, and one could debate endlessly about the possible or non-possible romantic nature but at least it makes sense.
but the only ship i care about is holmes/moriarty, which is utter crack, so take my responses with a large grain of salt. generally most of the shipping stuff in the new series i tend to wish wasn't there, because i don't want the producers telling me how to interpret the characters, damn it all.

I know what you mean about being told what to believe; perhaps it is that I relate to Martha more than Rose, so I feel less imposed-upon. It would be nice to allow the characters to have layers that were not unwrapped and spread out for us, however.
And jump in anytime, anyplace. Welcome!

dear production staff: please to not be thrusting russell t. davies' completely acceptable and understandable crush onto every other character in the show. many thanks. the prof_

Yes. This is a modern-day "Wimsey's golden hair" situation, without the class.

Martha just rules, though.
