Quiz Night and Song Meme
I've been meaning to tell this story for awhile now, since it happened a few weeks ago.
tkp convinced me to go to a pub quiz night. Actually, we danced around the invitation, neither of us knowing if the other one was serious about going/taking, but eventually we worked it out and there we were. The lure was Harry Potter trivia (which turned out to be lame). But in the random round, there was a question dear to my heart.
"What was the real name of the Elephant Man?"
I scribbled down Joseph Merrick, then put "(John)" after it just in case. "Just wait," I said. "They're going to say John."
When they read out the correct answer, of course it was John. I raised my hand like an overeager preschooler and said, "Excuse me! But that's wrong! Treves used 'John' in his account, but it was written after the fact and he was wrong; his real name was Joseph, even though the film used John."
Both answers got the point, and I got weird looks from the other people at our table. It was a proud moment. I was so earnest it was funny. See? There is a point to knowing stuff like that.
We still didn't win, though.

"Piazza, New York Catcher" is totally my favorite B&S song. Although "The Chalet Lines" has been creeping up on it lately. That song is just devastating.
Great Radiohead picks too. I love "Talk Show Host".

The picks are a little weird because I had to choose ones I knew the titles of, so although there are tons more Elliott Smith songs I could choose I've had Either/Or and XO longest so those are the titles I know.
"Paranoid Android" was a little obvious but that song still kills me.
I was going to tag you, if I tagged anyone, by the way.

Yeah, if I had done a #6 slot, it would have been Elliott Smith. But all of my songs would have been from the self-titled and From a Basement on the Hill.
And #7 would have been Radiohead. Actually, I'm really into Amnesiac right now. Something about the chord structures on that album is so sedated and sinister and AWESOME.

I like some stuff on Amnesiac, but it's never been among my favorites. Kid A I loved right off, which I hear wasn't the normal way of things; the follow-up didn't grab me.
Actually, this meme was done in a haphazard fashion by me, in the sense that I didn't strictly pick my five top artists--I picked five artists for whom I could easily pick out five songs. So anyone that would have required me going back to my shelf and reading off the titles, or anyone it was too difficult (Leonard Cohen, Neil Young) I didn't do.

The John/Joseph thing isn't "wrong," I guess, since so much of the material uses John.

"'What was the name of the creature in Mary Shelly's 'Frankenstein'?'" he says.
"Oh, that's easy!" I scoff, expecting a roomful of special effects make-up students to know it. Everyone looks at me. "It's Adam," say I.
Everyone looks at me.
"Well, really, what else would it have been?" say I.
Everyone looks at me. The tech admits I'm right. And I am startled that that was considered a hard question, and that no one else seemed to know it.
Different circles, I guess. ;-) But then, I own the book. *grin*
