There's still time to get your question in!
I should have realized that I have no idea what the popular opinions are about these things.

Doctor Who
*I adore Martha but don't hate Rose and don't understand why we all can't just get along.
*I hate Torchwood because I can't stand Barrowman's acting/delivery and because it's "adult" in the most juvenile way possible and also because no one's actions in S1 (which is all I've seen so far) are motivated by anything. This is not the good crack, kids. (Though Sarah Jane Adventures totally is!)
*I really dislike the Eighth Doctor, though I love Paul McGann in other things.
*I don't know if this is unpopular, but Lis Sladen looks better now than she did before.
*I don't watch enough Old Who anymore and am mostly working off vague memories of my childhood watching experiences. This makes me unpopular to me.

Phantom of the Opera
*Julian Sands is hot.
*Erik/Christine should explore the deep problems of the characters and their relationship.
*ALW is a hack.
*There should be more crack!fic.
*Movie!fic is totally okay if the author deals with the characters rationally and not like the movie did (in my opinion).
*Gaston Leroux was not a genius. He wrote a book that tapped into something, which makes it interesting and important. It is not a "work of art." It's pretty awesome, though. Those things aren't mutually exclusive.

Phantom of the Opera: Erik, Raoul, Daroga, Christine
This is a difficult category because there are so many (at least 2) camps of fandom. Most of my opinons would offend one or the other but not both.
*Erik: Would make a terrible husband and is wrong when he says that "if you loved me, I'd be as gentle as a lamb." It worked to let them go, but in the long run he's still who he is--and Christine would have learned that, had she stayed.
*Raoul: Not a fop, because the Raoul I know is brave, serious, not an inordinately snappy dresser and, most importantly, he is young. I think everything that might make Raoul unpopular could be fixed by a little maturity, which is why I don't understand Raoul bashing. We were all 20/1 once, weren't we? How rational were you?
*The Daroga: Has an uneasy relationship with his foreignness. He has rejected some aspects of his former life, but keeps the peaked cap. My daroga shaves, both as a sign of his uncertainty about his heritage and to differentiate himself from the prevailing styles of the time. His fascination with Erik contains both contempt and an unacknowledged envy that Erik has reached beyond society to do as he pleases.
*Christine: Is blonde unless there's a good reason for her not to be. She was not served well by her upbringing in Daddy Daae's fantasy world, but the story of Phantom is as much a story of her growing up as it is about anything else.
Phantom of the Paradise: Swan, Phoenix, Winslow Leach, The Juicy Fruits, Beef
I'm not sure what the prevailing opinions here are.
*Phoenix is not such an innocent; or at least, her easy defeat by Swan implies weakness of character.
*Winslow's Phantom persona is everything he wished he could be as a gawky, put upon teenager.
*Harold is my favorite Juicy Fruit ("Super Like You").
*Beef was just doing his job.

I have never had any exposure to this, frankly because of the name, which I find very silly.

Phantom of the Opera: Philippe de Chagny
Leroux goes to great pains to make us feel Philippe is a typical (almost admirable?) man of the world and takes good care of Raoul, but in his actions and expressions he seems a little rough. I'm not sure he understands Raoul at all, or knows how to help him. Philippe is one of the densest (as in, least imaginative and most wrong-headed) characters in the book, and as written (or sketched, really) I care about him very little.
That's not really an unpopular opinion, since no one expresses an opinion about Philippe. You want one?
I like Philippe from the Charles Dance miniseries. I like what they do with him. AND HIS HAIR.

X-Files: Scully
Is it "unpopular" that she's my favorite of the two? Or maybe that I don't put "ist" after one of their names? She's the one I relate to, despite the fact that when I started watching I was sort of All About Mulder's pain and hotness. Oh, but I have no interest in her as a mother, or her desire for motherhood, which may be because I have none but I also think was unecessary to the show and what I wanted from Scully's development.
And I don't care whether she dyes her hair or not.
I should have realized that I have no idea what the popular opinions are about these things.

I adore Philippe de Chagny! You and I are so alike in so many POTO ideas and do different on many others--it is simply glorious!

I liked his devotion to his brother and feel he acted in his best interests. My passion lies in history so I looked at his character from a deeper historical standpoint (wondering what he might have gone through in France during his upbringing. By the time Raoul was coming into the rights of his title and money, the power of nobility was on the way out) Raoul was about to dash off when he was 20 years old. (I believe the mention of him being 21 was a typo as if Raoul was 21 he would already be in control of his finances and not under the thumb of Philippe.) So I think Philippe was acting in with his heart when Raoul wanted to fall in love with a diva. They came from the same family--but were so opposite. 20 years between them, different eras of the class system, different time in military service (This from my research)
This was just a lot of mystery around this character that I enjoyed.

I could also read this as being at odds with his actual conduct, and therefore either a satiric line from Leroux or indicative of a difference in opinion from me.
I recognize the generational differences, and I'm not saying Philippe was unreasonable given his background. It still doesn't mean I like him.
As to Raoul's age, 20 seems likely, but the line is actually that he's 20 years younger than Philippe which makes him 21 if we're talking exactly 20 years. I believe the stated age is 20. However (and this is a pointless argument since the above is convincing) given propensity of the younger de Chagnys to defer to the Count, I believe Raoul would have to grow up a little emotionally to demand his inheritance. Remember, everyone acts as if "the laws of primogeniture are still in force" or whatever (paraphrase) and I can well imagine that including Raoul, if he wasn't pressed by other circumstances to take a stand.

Raoul has to mature a lot in many ways. Which is why I did not like Webber's version of him. He was too removed from the original idea. Loved the look--not the characterization. I can see Raoul as the 'hero' figure in Leroux (much in symbolism) and the Daroga in many cases as well. He is just a great secondary.
Leroux crafts such depth to each character. I have love exploring their ranges (and testing them) every step of the way.

To be honest, I didn't look it up, I'm going off memory, too. Which might just as well be faulty!

I would say, rather, that Leroux left a lot of room for us to craft depths to the characters; he left us many clues. For me, part of what makes POTO survive is that it is by no means a perfectly crafted work. There are openings for later works. Some works are so tightly finished that there is no "need" to redress them. But I think you and I fundamentally disagree about the "quality" of Leroux's book, even if we have much the same feelings and reactions to it.

Theres a rumour that Touchwood is going to change to its 7pm format from S3 onwards, get rid of the language and the pointless nudity, kill off two people and replace them with Mickey and Martha and endevour not to be shite. We'll see if they succeed.

*sulk* but but but hes the best one!!!

I agree.
Hellboy
I have never had any exposure to this, frankly because of the name, which I find very silly.
I really think you should get some exposure to this, its supposed the be vaguely silly, and there are lots of daft bits that you're supposed to giggle at (you're eight! You're not old enough to be giving me advice!). But under the silliness they have some truly awesome characters, especially the pyromancer, and of course the big red monkey demon himself. Also he says 'crap' in the best way evor.

*sulk* but but but hes the best one!!!
When I watch it, I can't shake this sense that they went into it going, "OMG we're going to make him PRITTEH!" and he comes off (for me) as this effete Byron wannabe. Which I'd have loved when I was 15 but now annoys me. I know this isn't how others see him at all.
So, Hellboy. Comics? Movie? What?
no subject
What makes Paul McGann effete? Seriously I don't see it... other than the hair and the frankly gorgeous costume, which was supposed to be based on the wild west anyway. He had him a mototrbike! But then I was 13 when it came out and was in love with the McGanns as a whole (omg the eyes) and frankly its in my genetic makeup to want to jump any guy in velvets and a cravat.
Hellboy, movie definitely. I love the comics but I think the movie is a better stronger introduction to the characters. Watch it when you're in a good mood and want a slightly silly movie. Also watch it all the way to the end of the credits :)
no subject
His look, to me, says "I am trying to be delicate and pretty." Obviously I am in the minority because I have never met anyone who shares this opinion. Also, I happen to like effete/delicate/pretty/Bryonic. To me, Eight came off as Trying Too Hard and it turned me off. I can't really explain it better than that. I'm not saying it's rational. Also, I watched it for the first time last year.

At least McGabnn isn't wearing a decorative vegetable!
Personally I've always thought Eccleston was trying too hard to appear tough with the buzzcut and leathers, but then I always think hes trying to hard no matter what he's in. Except Jackanory. That was his kind of level.... You probably won't know what that is.
I wish I'd not wasted my time watching S2. I'll watch the finally because I want to see who if anyone) dies and see Spike cause chaos. I *have* to, his character has my surname :p

I thought Eccleston was spot on in 28 Days Later, but I had no idea who he was then.
I not-so-secretly love Peter Davison.

He was in 28 Days Later? I've only half seen that so I probably wasn't paying attention...
I know, thats why I said that :p He was awesome in All Creatures though...

Man, I love that movie. He's in the second half, though. He's good.
